In most Dutch shops it is now possible to pay with the new Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards. Good news for Dutch people with these new payment cards, but also for international visitors to our country. As part of the Debit Card Acceptance (DCA) project, most payment terminals in the Netherlands have already been replaced or adapted for these new debit cards. This project was a successful collaboration between the Dutch Payment Association, payment service providers, terminal suppliers, transaction processors, banks, Visa and Mastercard.
Until recently, Maestro and V PAY were among the standard within payment transactions in the Netherlands. A problem for many tourists and other visitors from abroad, as they already had the Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards. Most businesses in the Netherlands can now also serve these customers without any problems.
Gijs Boudewijn, director of the Dutch Payment Association: "We managed to do this together within a year. At most Dutch cash registers, customers can now also use Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard cards, just like in the countries around us. That's nice for tourists as well as for Dutch people who will all be getting those new debit cards in the coming years."

Over the next years, Maestro and V PAY debit cards will be replaced. This will usually be based on the expiry date of the current card. So the cardholder does not have to do anything himself. The new debit card will be sent by the bank automatically. Maestro and V PAY debit cards will continue to work as normal in the coming years. Consumers can therefore continue to make debit and cash withdrawals without any problems, both in the Netherlands and within Europe.
